A II. Józsefről elnevezett altárna közel 100 évig épült. Ez a különleges építmény vezette le a föld alatt a selmeci bánya vizeit a Garam (Hron) folyóba. Hossza összesen 16 538 méter, mélysége pedig 76 méter. Átadására 1879. október 21.-én egy forintos emlékérmét bocsátottak ki, amit most közelebbről is megismerhettek.
