Az 1848–49-es forradalom és szabadságharc Magyarország újkori történetének egyik meghatározó eseménye, a modern nemzeti identitás egyik alapkövévé vált, mivel egyszerre törekedett az egyéni szabadságjogok kivívására és a nemzeti önrendelkezés megteremtésére.
Ekkoriban főként papír alapú fizetőeszközök voltak elterjedve, de kis mennyiségben érméket is vertek, de ezt az időszakot az általános fémpénz hiány jellemezte.
