1640. június 9-én született Bécsben I. Lipót magyar király (uralkodása 1657-1705) és német-római császár, III. Ferdinánd (uralkodása 1637-1657) második fia, aki majdnem fél évszázadig foglalta el Magyarország trónját. Uralkodása alatt rengeteget változott a magyar pénzkibocsátás. Rendeletére megkezdődött a krajcárok verése. Ebben az új rendszerben a már korábban is használt dukát, tallér, dénár és obulus mellett az új érmék is használatba kerültek.
