Magyarország 1938-ban fényes külsőségek között emlékezett meg államalapító első királyunk, Szent István halálának 900. évfordulójáról, többek között ekkor tartották Budapesten a 34. Eucharisztikus Világkongresszust, és ebben az évben indult országjáró körútjára a Szent Jobbot szállító Aranyvonat. Szinte magától értetődött, hogy az ünneplés eszköztárából nem hiányozhatott az emlékpénzkibocsátás sem: megszületett az ún. Szent István 5 pengős.
